Welcome to the Renaissance, what a time for a dog to be alive! This humorous collection of historical hounds celebrates not just the delightfully odd-looking creatures immortalised in oils and ink, but our insistence on squeezing them into every frame of our lives, ensuring their place in the history books.
A compendium of curious canines from a bygone age, this is a timeless tribute to the endearing antics, unshakeable loyalty and slobbery devotion of dogs everywhere. A perfect gift for animal lovers, art and art history buffs, dog owners, artists and collectors of animal art.
Our four-legged friends have witnessed some of history's greatest hits: Shakespeare, Da Vinci, the Sistine Chapel, the first printed book, and even the first flushable toilet. But behind the achievements of every great man is his dog; sometimes enthusiastically looking on, at others asleep. Or eating a chicken. Or sniffing another dog's rear end...
If every dog has its day, then the Renaissance period was it. dogs were everywhere - especially in pictures and paintings. They were highly valued as status symbols, loyal companions, protectors and hunters. Sourced from museums and art collections all around the world, Renaissance Dogs is the very first dog-alogue of its kind. It's a comical celebration of man's best friend, as seen through their eyes, and offers readers valuable insight into the world of dogs during the Golden Age and how they were represented in timeless art masterpieces.
