This rich sampling of the paintings of Pierre-Auguste Renoir speak to his mastery of colour and extraordinary facility in the use of paint. He believed that his paintings should be likeable, joyous, and pretty: his paintings of figures, interiors, and landscapes show an engaging strength, delicacy, and charm; as you will discover in this book of postcards.
About the artist:
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France in 1841, the son of a tailor, and started painting at the age of 13 after becoming an apprentice to a porcelain painter. One of the most highly regarded artists of his time, Renoir was among the central artists who launched the Impressionism movement in the 1870s. But the name of this now well-loved movement was originally an insult after an unsuccessful initial exhibition of works by Renoir, along with his friends Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cezanne, and Edgar Degas in Paris in 1874. A critical review of the exhibition complained that the works, which used brilliant colours and light to depict real life, were mere 'impressions', rather than the finished paintings created using traditional methods. He is best known for his depictions of children, voluptuous women, flowers, and peasant scenes and famously noted 'Art is about emotion; if art needs to be explained it is no longer art'.
The 30 works included in this postcard book are drawn from the largest collection of his work, an extensive 181 Renoir paintings at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
