Covering 800 years and 100 artists, this fresh, engaging illustrated history of art explains the fundamentals every art lover needs while presenting the development of different schools and styles as one continuous, astonishing timeline. From Giotto to Leonardo, Frida to Banksy. A great reading companion if you've ever wanted to learn more about art history.

An accessible and entertaining history of painting, Leonardo, Frida and the Others covers topics such as: how museums are structured; how painters use proportion and perspective; the anatomy of a painting; and offers surprising comparisons between artists such as Sandro Botticelli and Mary Cassatt, Claude Monet and Joan Mitchell, Delacroix and Rubens.

This hardback book uses a chronological presentation, featuring artists classified by movement, school or style. Focusing on teaching readers how to identify artistic movements and recognise symbols, inviting them to discover the backstage of museums.

Every artist and example artwork featured has its own detailed information page that breaks down information into 5 accessible categories:

  1. Portrait of the artist: Biographical elements featuring three key items and an unexpected anecdote
  2. Timescale: Key dates and notable historical events, helping readers find their bearings
  3. Detailed explanations, point by point: A precise visual analysis of the example painting, helping readers understand what they are looking at
  4. The all-important detail: That makes the work so different and unique
  5. Boxed features: With snippets of art history facts to hone one's artistic culture

Terms such as Baroque, Ukiyo-e, Graffiti, Cubism, Degenerate Art, and De Stijl are explored and explained.

Non-western traditions are given much greater prominence than in other art history books; Chinese, Indian, Australian Aboriginal, and African Art are all included in the timeline. Numerous women artists who were overlooked during the author’s own education are restored to the canon. Accompanying the unpretentious but authoritative texts are hundreds of illustrations, reproductions, timelines and sidebars.

Featuring illustrations by Jean André.
