Learn how to master the ancient art of Islamic geometric patterns with this informative guide. Re-create classic examples or craft your own intricate patterns, all you need is a pencil, a ruler, a compass, and most importantly, a steady hand!

The dazzling complexity of Islamic patterns is among the most recognizable features of Islamic art and architecture. Their rhythmic repetitions adorn beautiful and historic monuments from Central Asia to North Africa and southern Spain: carved in stone, painted on ceilings or vividly tiled, they create forms at once meticulous and monumental. Yet few know the geometric techniques traditional craftsmen used to create these mesmerizing works, or how they can be combined and scaled to form such magnificent constructions.

In Islamic Geometric Patterns author Eric Broug begins by providing technical tips to demonstrate the basics like drawing squares, hexagons or pentagons. This is then followed by some of the best examples of geometric patterns from around the world, arranged into 3 levels of complexity, accompanied with careful step-by-step instructions on how to replicate them with your own hand.

Featuring geometric patterns from some of the most famous and beautiful Islamic architecture and art, including:

  • The Great Mosque of Cordoba, Spain
  • Cappella Palatina, Sicily, Italy
  • Esrefoglu Mosque, Turkey
  • The Umayyad Mosque, Syria
  • The 'Abd al-Samad Complex, Iran
  • The Great Mosque of Herat, Afghanistan
  • Mustansiriya Madrasa, Iraq
  • The Tomb of Bibi Jawindi, Pakistan
  • Qarawiyyin Mosque, Morocco
  • The Mosque of Ibn Tulun, Egypt
