Across the Roman and Greek empires, people worshipped hundreds of different gods, goddesses, demi gods and spirits. Their images would appear on architecture, household items and jewellery.

Fun and educational jewellery to inspire inquisitive minds!

In ancient Greece, dolphins were not just animals but were considered demigods and held a special, almost cult-like status. They were often depicted in art, sculpture, and pottery, symbolizing their deep connection with the gods, particularly Apollo and Poseidon. The belief that harming a dolphin was akin to offending the gods led to the idea that killing one could be punishable by death. Dolphins were seen as messengers of the gods and were deeply associated with the processes of life, death, and rebirth. Their ability to transition between the air-breathing world of humans and the terrifying abyss beneath the waves further solidified their divine status.

Part of the accompanying collection for the Ashmolean special exhibition Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess, on display at the Ashmolean Museum 8 October 2026 - 11 April 2027.
