The woodblock print features a rainbow. In Japanese Art, rainbows were often represented with just three colours, red, yellow and blue, or as virtually colourless. Here, Hiroshige focuses on the crisp outline of the bow and uses it to emphasise the intense blue of the landscape.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was famous for his woodblock prints especially his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Series.
