Ashmolean Museum Oxford
The Ashmolean Museum was established in 1683 and is the oldest Museum in the United Kingdom. It was first installed in a fine, custom-built museum close to the Bodleian Library on Broad Street, which now houses the History of Science Museum, before moving to its present location on Beaumont Street in 1908.
It houses Oxford University's collections of art and antiquities, largely built up from gifts and legacies over three centuries. These collections are of national and international importance - from the civilisations on the Ancient Near East, Egypt and Prehistoric Europe, through Ancient Greece and Rome, to the Renaissance in Europe and the present day. The collection of coins and medals is world-renowned, as are the outstanding displays of contemporary Chinese Art, as well as works of art from Japan, India and the Islamic World.
The Ashmolean has more than one million objects in the collection, spanning four millennia. This guidebook invites you to learn more about 75 of the most iconic and outstanding pieces, illustrating the remarkable diversity of the displays.
