Take home a memento from the Ashmolean NOW exhibition with this beautiful A5 print with textured deckled edges, featuring the artwork Re-sensitizing the Brown Narrative by Bangladeshi contemporary artist Soma Surovi Jannat.
Re-sensitizing the Brown Narrative (2023-ongoing series) began during the artist's residency in Oxford at the Ashmolean, exploring how brown carries different meanings across cultures; neutral in the West, resonant with earth and memory in the East. This series looks to gently decolonize our perception of colour, history, and nature. Guided by overlooked lives found in historic clay figures and miniatures, the artist moves slowly and deliberately, allowing brown to become a space where histories, lives, and natural cycles converge.
This artwork, along with others by the Bangladeshi artist, will be on display as part of the fifth instalment of the free Ashmolean NOW series located in Gallery 8 of the Ashmolean Museum. Open from 28 March - 1 November 2026.

In 2023, Soma Surovi Jannat (b.1990), one of the most exciting emerging artists working in South Asia, became the Ashmolean’s first artist-in-residence from Bangladesh. Jannat’s art practice arises from a profound connection with nature. Inspired by the Ashmolean collection, her recent works weave together motifs to create new imaginary worlds of forests, bodies of water, animal and human forms.
The exhibition will capture the ways in which Jannat explores the climate crisis, natural disasters, and the disproportionate impact on marginalised communities and ecosystems. An artist of exceptional talent and versatility, this would be Jannat’s first solo exhibition in the UK focusing on her engagement with the Ashmolean collections and the works created between 2023 and 2026.
