Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) belongs to a group of artists, who faced unfortunate timing in their careers. Born into an era when traditional ukiyo-e was declining. By the time the new renaissance of Japanese printmaking emerged with Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga movements, they were considered too old to actively partake in this artistic resurgence. He was a versatile artist involved in various artistic endeavours, including war prints, illustrations, bijin prints portraying beautiful women, genre scenes depicting women and children, and maintaining a career as a serious painter and printmaker. By 1900, Mizuno Toshikata had gained significant recognition as an illustrator, painter, and printmaker. He died on April 7, 1908, at the age of 43.
