Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is considered one of the world's greatest painters, his work has had long lasting influence on 20th century art and has remained visually and emotionally powerful to this day. He painted Irises, one of almost 130 paintings he completed while at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The composition of the deep blue and purple hues of the blossoming flowers, set against the contrast of the greens of the leaves and the oranges in the ground, creates a dynamic, joyful and vibrant painting.
