Pitt Rivers Museum
A set of three lined notebooks with covers taken from the series of Insect and Arachnid People of Subterranean Hawai’i, portraits by Solomon Enos commissioned by The Pitt Rivers Museum.
Designs include:
The Transporter - Endemic Hawai'ian insect: xyleborus molokaienesis. A farmer employs and 'auamo (carrying stick) to convey a harvest of 'uala (weet potato) to be traded. At his side he carries ab water gourd that is instead being used to hold nectar. This series is based on a scene within a Hawai'ian Mythological Epic called Hi'iakaikapoliopele, where the heroine Hi'iaka encounters a subterranean world populated by shape-shifting insect-people
The Gatherer - endemic Hawai'ian insect: udara blackburni. One of many gatherers, she spends her time seeking and harvesting a broad range of materials such as food, flowers, nectar, medicinal plants. dye-making and carving materials, and anything else her community needs. With her iridescent wings strengthened by her many years of gathering, she is able to fly with nearly thrice her weight in cargo, though as she weighs very little, this is a slightly modest yet considerable weight.
The Spear Catcher - endemic Hawaiian insect: megalagrion oceanicum. During the Makahiki season, which is dedicated to the insect-hybrid version of the agricultural god also known to the surface dwellers as Lono, great athletes emerge to champion the many communities from which they belong. Represented here is a well-known spear catcher in the act of dodging and gathering spears out of the air as they sail towards her.
Solomon Enos is a Honolulu based Native Hawaiian artist, illustrator, sculptor, muralist, game designer, eternal possibilist, and community leader. Mo‘olelo Archetypes, a series of paintings by Hawaiian artist Solomon Enos, brings to life a scene from the epic Hawaiian myth Hiʻiakaikapoliopele. View the display on the first floor of the Pitt Rivers Museum.
