JMW Turner (1775–1851) was a renowned landscape artist who had an intimate knowledge of Oxford. The River Cherwell in Oxfordshire provides a perfect habitat for waterlilies and rushes, which thrive in the foreground due to the deepening of the stream. Turner's uncle owned the nearby Shipton-on-Cherwell manor and estate, which can be faintly seen in the distance.
