Pitt Rivers Museum
This souvenir magnet features the distinctive Pitt Rivers Museum logo, a stylised view of the museum and its famous cabinets.
The Pitt Rivers Museum is the University of Oxford’s Museum of anthropology and world archaeology. It was founded in 1884 when General Augustus Lane Fox Pitt Rivers, a pioneer archaeologist and keen collector, donated his collection of over 26,000 archaeological and ethnographic objects to the University.
There is a popular perception that the Pitt Rivers Museum is a ‘museum of a museum’, but in fact none of the original displays from the 19th century still exist. The museum has always adapted and changed over time by updating the displays, adding to the collections and constantly working to keep it relevant.
Today we continue to undertake transformational work to bring the displays into the 21st century, working closely with originating communities to provide the best care for the collections we steward.
