Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist, widely regarded as the final great master of this artistic tradition. His work is characterized by subtle colour application, achieved through layering multiple impressions in the same area and the skilled use of bokashi; a technique involving hand-applied ink gradients on a moistened wooden block instead of uniform inking, these labour-intensive methods highlight the artist’s craftsmanship. Western European artists like Manet and Monet admired and studied Hiroshige’s compositions in depth. Notably, Vincent van Gogh even created painted copies of several of Hiroshige’s prints.
