This black sugar spoon features a smooth, bowl-shaped scoop perfect for serving sugar, flour, or spices with ease. Carved by hand from sustainably sourced wild olive wood, no two spoons are the same making each one exclusive and individual. The authentic Batik handle offers a comfortable grip for reaching into tall containers. Olive wood's natural hardness and density make it ideal for kitchen use.
The Pitt Rivers Museum's contemporary wooden products are hand carved in a Nairobi workshop run by one of the founders of the popular Maasai Market in Westlands, Zephania. These items are made from wild olive wood that is all sustainably sourced from Zephania’s own plantations in his hometown, Kissi, where he continually re-plants trees.
The long, sturdy handle enables easy access to the bottom of tall containers. Versatile uses, such as baking, tea-making, and home-cooking. The handle has been finished with sustainably sourced cow bone, helping to reduce wastage and continue cultural traditions.
Olive wood has an excellent reputation for being harder and less porous than other woods. Treat them once a month with a food safe mineral oil, we like to use olive oil. Simply rub in a small amount with a soft cloth to condition the wood and restore its warm, polished look.
Product recommended care: hand wash wooden utensils with a mild detergent and warm water. Avoid boiling water and dishwashers as high temperatures may cause the wood to expand and split. Always towel dry after washing to prevent moisture cracks. The same measures apply to wooden utensils with horn or bone accents.
