Alfred Jewel Earrings

by The Bill Skinner Studio

£75.00

Designed exclusively for the Ashmolean Museum shop, these attractive earrings are crafted by the Bill Skinner Studio as a faithful reproduction of the museum’s beloved Alfred Jewel.

Dating back to the 9th century AD, the Alfred Jewel is probably the most iconic piece in the vast Ashmolean collection, making these gold earrings the perfect gift for fans of the Oxford museum, those interested in Anglo Saxon history or simply for someone who appreciates truly beautiful things.

Made of brass plated with bright 14K gold, these delicate drop earrings feature hand enamelled central images copied from the original Alfred Jewel. This famed image, thought by most historians to represent the sense of sight, brings real character to the earrings which also feature a copy of the openwork inscription surrounding the Alfred Jewel; AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN, translated to ‘Alfred ordered me to be made’, a statement which links the historic artefact to King Alfred the Great (r. 871 - 899) and leads experts to believe that it was commissioned by the Anglo Saxon monarch himself.

Please note that due to hygiene reasons we cannot accept returned earrings.

Exclusive to the Ashmolean Museum.
