Ashmolean Museum Oxford
Chikako was the daughter of the ship builder Zeniya Gobei, a very wealthy man as well as a local hero, who was later jailed when he ran out of money.
Chikako prayed for her father's release, jumping to her death in the freezing waters of the Asano River to demonstrate her sincerity. Yoshitoshi depicts the lonely Chikako in free fall, a bright flutter of fabric against the snowy landscape. She holds her hands together in prayer as her tissues hang in the air and egrets fly away from her plummeting form.
