This larger A3 size print features a study of a Hairy-stemmed poppy by Austrian botanical illustrator and artist, Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826), titled Hairy poppy (Papaverum Pilosum).

The original work will be on display as part of the upcoming special exhibition In Bloom: How Plants Changed Our World at the Ashmolean Museum from 19 March - 16 August 2026.

Supplied unframed, this print comes with a backing board and is sealed in a clear cellophane pocket. Fits perfectly into one of our A3 wooden frames.

The subject of this artwork is a rare, hardy, herbaceous perennial native to Turkey that is known for its hairy grey-green foliage and the delicate soft, single, pale orange and apricot coloured flowers that possess a paper-like texture.

To create the plant paintings for John Sibthorp's publication Flora Graeca, Bauer referenced not only the sketches he had made while traveling on his survey of the eastern Mediterranean, but also the herbarium specimens and plants growing in the Oxford Botanic Garden.
