Ashmolean Museum Oxford
by Catherine Whistler
This booklet looks at 'The Hunt in the Forest' by Paolo Uccello, a painting which is often considered to be a masterpiece of the early Renaissance.
Paolo Uccello’s passion for mathematics and perspective was evoked by Giorgio Vasari in his Lives of the Artists of 1550. Yet Uccello (1397–1475) was also a superb decorative artist, who worked on designs for mosaic and stained glass. His intriguing late masterpiece, The Hunt in the Forest, is a highly original, cleverly constructed and brilliantly animated hunting scene.
It belongs to the last decade of Uccello's career and portrays a hunting scene with figures in contemporary dress. This book sets out to explore the place of the painting in Uccello's career, and to look closely at its physical composition, its design and subject matter, before suggesting the kind of audience for which it was made, and how the examination of the painting has enriched our understanding of Uccello's artistic achievement.
