About the artist:

Henri Matisse was a classically-trained French visual artist whose work pioneered new modern approaches to painting during the turn of the twentieth century, and was one of the first artists to step away from traditional painting altogether. Examples of these breaks from tradition most notably include the vivid colourism of his paintings of the early 1900s, now commonly known as the Fauvism movement. Having also worked as a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, Matisse’s colourful artwork mostly depicted still life and the human figure. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, has cemented his position as a leading figure in the modern art movement.

The 30 works included in this postcard book are drawn from the extensive Matisse holdings in the collection of the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
