Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a master of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock printing. His prints regularly feature large scale warrior figures within scenes of warlike encounters. Chūsenko Teitokuson, depicted here, was a master of the use of a particular type of sword called a hisa, while riding a horse. The scene here depicts the battle of Kyūshū, where Chūsenko Teitokuson's army was attacked during a night raid.
