Ashmolean NOW Pio Abad Catalogue

by Lena Fritsch, Pio Abad & Vera Mey

£20.00

This beautifully designed book accompanies an exhibition of new works by Pio Abad, the second exhibition of the Ashmolean NOW series that will be held at the Ashmolean Museum between 10 Feb – 8 Sep 2024.

At the Ashmolean, Abad has selected artefacts from the University of Oxford’s extensive collections and created new drawings, engravings and sculptures in response to personages and narratives embedded within the historical works. In facilitating transhistorical and transcultural conversations, Abad’s exhibition and this book serve as a conduit for the stories of the objects to continue.

The catalogue contains 4 black and white illustrations, and 100 colour illustrations.

Pio Abad has been shortlisted for the 2024 Turner Prize for his Ashmolean NOW exhibition.

Pio Abad (born 1983 in Manila) studied at the Glasgow School of Art, before completing his MA at the Royal Academy Schools in 2012. His wide-ranging body of work is concerned with the personal and political entanglements of objects.

His art mines alternative or repressed historical events and offers counternarratives that draw out threads of complicity between incidents, ideologies and people. Deeply informed by unfolding events in the Philippines, where the artist was born and raised, the work emanates from a family narrative woven into the nation’s story.

Lena Fritsch is the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ashmolean, responsible for exhibitions, displays and acquisitions of international art. She teaches at the University of Oxford, V&A and SOAS. Previously, she was a curator at Tate Modern, London and Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.
