Sylloge of Aksumite Coins in the Ashmolean

by Wolfgang Hahn & Vincent West

£24.00

This volume describes and illustrates the 600 Aksumite coins held in the Heberden Coin Room of the Ashmolean Museum.

Covering the whole sequence of the coin-striking kings of the Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum from the third to the seventh century AD, they constitute one of the largest public collections in the world, unrivalled in its representation of gold coins. The introduction offers a guide to our present state of knowledge of the monetary history of Ethiopia in late Antiquity, for which the coinage is of primary source value. The history of the Ashmolean Aksumite collection is also described, by far the most important acquisition being the cabinet of the late Bent Juel-Jensen in 2004.

The catalogue was prepared in collaboration by two leading specialists in Aksumite coinage, Prof. Wolfgang Hahn of the University of Vienna and Vincent West MA (Cantab).
