Ashmolean Museum Oxford
This single greeting card recreates a close-up detail of a drawing from 16th century Italian artist Giulio Pippi, alias Giulio Romano, entitled Four studies of an Elephant in red chalk on laid paper.
Giulio Pippi, also known as Giulio Romano (1499-1546), was a renowned Italian painter and architect. He received training under Raphael and his unique artistic interpretations of the High Renaissance style became a defining characteristic of the Mannerist movement in the sixteenth century. The artwork of Giulio is highly coveted by collectors, with contemporary prints engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi playing a significant role in spreading the Italian style of the 16th century across Europe.
After moving to Mantua in late 1524 at the invitation of the city's ruler at the time nobleman Federico Gonzaga, a patron of the arts who had had his portrait painted by Titian and Raphael, and commissioned - with Giulio Pippi as master designer and architect - the Palazzo Te in the Mantua suburbs. Rather than his given name, "Giulio Romano" was used to identify him by his geographical origin because he was not a native artist. Mantua is where he executed his most well-known work, hence that name became associated with him thereafter. He lived here until his death in 1546.
