Maple Trees at Mama, Tekona Shrine and Linked Bridge, 1857 The village of Mama lay ten miles east of central Edo. It was famous for the beauty of its maple trees in the autumn and Hiroshige frames his composition with vivid orange leaves. Beyond the trees to the left is the Tekona Shrine. The shrine was dedicated to the legendary peasant girl Tekona, who drowned herself in the river at Mama because of the fierce rivalry between her many suitors. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858)
