Skeleton Acrylic Keyring

The decorative mosaic that this keyring takes its image from would originally have been set into the dining room floor in Pompeii, and shows a grinning skeleton holding two Askoi, or wine jugs.

While putting a skeleton on your dining room floor today might seem a bit odd, for the Romans, it was completely normal. This is because the skeleton reminded them to seize the day, or ‘carpe diem’ as the Romans used to say. In this dining room, the skeleton would have served as a reminder to enjoy the meal while they could. In ancient Rome, food and wine played a big part in the afterlife as well.
