Pineapple, Ananas comosus first fruited in the Garden in 1744. However it was vastly expensive to grow them; they needed deep beds of dung and fermenting compost to keep them warm and constant attention from gardeners.

In Britain, for the next two hundred years, pineapples become a symbol of wealth and were used to show off!
