Ashmolean: Black Bear Cub Christmas Cards

£6.50

Black Bear Cub in Snow by Mori Shūhō.

Mori Shūhō was a Japanese artist who lived between 1783 and 1813. This work actually comes from an album of paintings and calligraphy by various artists - an artistic trend which was popular in early-19th-century Japanese art. This painting is signed ‘Hokkyō (Bridge of the Law) Shūhō', and was done before he attained the highest honorary rank of hōin (Seal of the Law).

He was the elder brother of Mori Sosen, a renowned painter of monkeys. Shūhō combined the traditional style of Kano painting with the newly learned Western style of depth-perception in painting. Original Image: Ink and colour on silk.
